
COORDINATION & GOVERNANCE OF TECH
Multipolar traps and perverse incentives underpin most systemic issues, incentivizing behaviour and technological development that's in nobody's long-term interest. We're looking for viable systems of governance and coordination that incentivize towards peace and balanced progress.

The Anatomy of Systemic Failures
To understand why modern global and local systems are failing, we must look beyond the crises we see on the surface and diagnose the underlying architectural flaws and patterns of human organization. The vast majority of our civilization's self-imposed existential threats - from ecological degradation and economic instability to misaligned technological acceleration - are not driven primarily by individual malice. Instead, they are the predictable outcomes of broken game-theoretic structures that result in multipolar traps and perverse incentives. Looking at these deeper features transforms our view and action from blaming individuals or addressing a whole variety of separate crises - like climate change, pollution, AI risks, wars, political polarization, mental and physical health, etc... - to addressing a handful of underlying dynamics that drive all of them. This is what some of the leading thinkers in the field, such as Daniel Schmachtenberger, refer to as the Metacrisis.
Multipolar Traps
A multipolar trap (often anthropomorphized in systems philosophy as "Moloch") is a negative-sum situation that occurs when independent actors, optimizing for their own short-term survival or competitive advantage, are forced into choices that culminate in collective, long-term catastrophe. In these scenarios, unilateral disregard for the common good is the dominant strategy, while unilateral virtue is penalized by elimination. Examples:
The Prisoner's Dilemma and Races to the Bottom: When multiple sovereign entities (corporations, nation-states, individuals...) operate in a high-stakes, low-trust environment, they cannot afford to slow down or self-regulate. If one actor pauses to consider the ethical or long-term safety implications of an innovation, they risk being permanently outpaced by competitors who do not share those concerns or downplay them for the sake of short-term advantage. This competitive dynamic creates an environment where safety, sustainability, and ethical guardrails are discarded as luxury overhead. The system structurally selects for the most aggressive, extractive, and short-sighted behaviors, leaving well-meaning leaders trapped within a game where the rules mandate self-destructive optimization.
Tragedy of the Commons: When many entities share a common resource (atmosphere, oceans, drinking water, grazing land, forests, etc...), there is an asymmetry between gains and harms. Individual gains from exploiting more of the resource are immediate and appealing (e.g. catching and selling more fish or ramping up industrial activity that brings more profits, but emits more pollutants into the atmosphere). Meanwhile, harms are distributed into the commons and usually not immediately visible (eventual collapse of fish populations or a polluted atmosphere). This, together with the competitive dynamic between the entities, creates incentives for each of them to exploit the resource as much as they can. Collectively, this leads to the eventual destruction of the commons that harms everyone. If any one of the entities virtuously restrains themselves, they risk getting outcompeted and doing so does nothing to prevent others from grabbing a larger share. The system, thus, through competitive selection, gets dominated by players who maximally exploit.
We can recognize such dynamics in virtually all important challenges our civilization is facing. Overfishing, industry, AI race, international relations, land exploitation, resource depletion, etc. - all of them are being driven by the same patterns. Solving a particular technical problem (like banning a harmful chemical) without solving the underlying multipolar trap will therefore simply relocate the harm somewhere else.

Perverse Incentives
Perverse incentives occur when the explicit rewards within a system align against its stated values or long-term survival. Our current global and local political and economic architectures are rife with these misalignments:
Negative Externalities: Economic systems routinely incentivize actors to privatize profits while socializing systemic risks and environmental costs.
The Extraction of Attention: Information ecosystems are optimized for engagement rather than truth, rewarding the amplification of outrage, division, and cognitive fragmentation because it maximizes ad revenue.
The Pacing Problem: Technological capabilities are scaling exponentially, whereas human governance institutions and regulations only evolve incrementally. This expanding gap creates a regulatory vacuum where high-stakes technologies are deployed globally long before society has developed the ethical, legal, or cultural infrastructure to manage them safely. Technology companies are economically incentivized to launch as fast as possible (otherwise they get outcompeted) and push back against regulation, accelerating the dynamic with every step.
The Technological Accelerant
While multipolar traps have existed throughout human history - manifesting as historical arms races, falls of empires or local versions of Tragedy of the Commons - the advent of advanced, exponential technology has fundamentally altered the stakes. Technology acts as a force multiplier for systemic risk, compressing the timelines available for human intervention and amplifying the destructive potential of coordination failures.
As we push deeper into the fields such as artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, geoengineering, and autonomous cyber-systems, the margin for error drops to zero. In a multipolar trap governing AI development, for example, the incentive is to deploy models faster, with less oversight, to secure market dominance or geopolitical leverage.
Similarly, in synthetic biology, the democratization of dual-use capabilities means that a single coordination failure could lead to catastrophic biological proliferation. When the cost of destruction drops faster than the cost of defense, traditional reactive governance models become entirely obsolete. We cannot afford to learn from our mistakes when the mistakes are civilizational existential threats.

Redesigning the Game
Humanity is not helpless against these systemic currents. However, moral appeals, corporate social responsibility pledges, and traditional top-down regulations are structurally insufficient to change the tide. If a system rewards extraction and short-term profits over long-term wellbeing, actors will extract and exploit in one way or the other - be it fossil fuels or human attention or anything else that can be privatized and monetized. That's why, in spite of all the corporate sustainability targets, there has been no significant improvement and risks continue mounting.
Therefore, we seek leverage for change on the level of fundamental design of social structures, institutions and mechanisms. Human nature holds potential for ruthless competition and ignorance, but it also holds potential for collaboration and care. Which traits get selected for and amplified depends on the systems and cultures that shape us. We explore questions such as:
How can we use both cultural and systemic approaches to alter reward mechanisms such that multipolar traps become positive-sum games?
How do we continually internalize social and environmental externalities into our systems such that externalizing harm is no longer incentivized?
What types of institutions (local and global) do we need to ensure enough checks and balances on power?
How can we ensure enough transparency such that governance mechanisms can be effective, but not in the way that compromises privacy and freedom?
What regulatory mechanisms do we need to put in place to avoid exponential technology amplifying externalities and multipolar traps?
How can technology help build trust and coordination instead of eroding it?

Our approach is an iterative loop, involving three main activities:
1. Research & Modeling
We conduct joint interdisciplinary research, drawing from fields such as game theory, economics, cybernetics, complexity science, anthropology, psychology. We're looking to build deep, multi-faceted understanding of coordination problems and technology-amplified social evolution. Combining theoretical models and experiences in the field, we're searching for and modeling better systems of coordination and governance.
2. Piloting & Grassroots Initiatives
We pilot, test and validate new systems and interventions at small scales within communities, regions and our partner networks.
3. High-Leverage Coalition Building
We build strategic partnerships with the capability to translate lessons learned into global action and scale new models of cooperation and governance.
The Horizon
The ultimate purpose of this work is to shift the trajectory of human civilization from a zero-sum or negative-sum race towards self-destruction to a state of dynamic equilibrium.
When we articulate our goals as peace and balanced progress, we are not advocating for a stagnant utopian ideal of zero conflict or absence of innovation or all people magically becoming caring and not self-interested. Rather, we're talking about realigning systemic drivers such that self-interested behaviour at the expense of other entities or the integrity of our living environment is no longer favourable.
When we talk about peace, we're talking about the structural absence of systemic violence, predatory extraction, and existential arms races. And when we talk about balanced progress, we're talking about progress that is not measured in extraction or consumption based metrics and dictated by technological power and competitiveness. Instead, this kind of progress is aimed to continuously improve social fabric, meaningful life and resilience of our entire living systems - whereas technology and economy are subjected to that goal, not dictating the goals themselves.
By systematically dismantling multipolar traps and replacing perverse incentives with cooperative architectures, we are envisioning the foundational infrastructure for a future where humanity can navigate its greatest transitions with wisdom, resilience, and unity.
