The purpose of our research is providing more clarity on current trajectories of human progress, viable models for a sustainable and wise future society and tangible steps to bridge that gap. Our highly interdisciplinary approach uses insights from fields such as economics, physics, game theory, complexity science, philosophy, life sciences and others - resting on an underlying foundations of ethics and deep appreciation for the humbling beauty of life.

PRIMARY AREAS OF FOCUS

COORDINATION & GOVERNANCE OF TECH

Multipolar traps and perverse incentives underpin most systemic issues, incentivizing behaviour and technological development that's in nobody's long-term interest. We're looking for systems of governance and coordination that incentivize towards peace and balanced progress.

How can we as individuals, communities and organizations nurture clarity, resilience and meaningful culture in an increasingly chaotic world? Which skills are worth developing and how? How can we get from information bubbles and opinions to meaningful dialogue and shared understanding?

Global economy rests on mainstream economic thought that is focused on narrow metrics and largely detached from physical reality. Building on the work of pioneers in fields such as ecological economics, systems thinking and complexity science, we're showing possibilities for radically better economic models.

CURRENTLY ACTIVE RESEARCH

The exponential nature of modern finance, driven by claims on future consumption (i.e. debt and interest) is mandating exponentially increasing monetization in order to sustain the system and keep finance from collapsing. But what is being monetized? All money exchanged in the real economy is underpinned by a combination of the following factors:

  • Human energy and time (labor, attention, time spent in an activity...)

  • Exogenous energy (all energy not being generated by human labor - fossil fuels, solar, nuclear, wood, in the past animals such as horses, etc...)

  • Materials (minerals, oil, biomass, water, etc...)

  • Living organisms and systems (animals, plants, ecosystems...)

An interest-based financial system thus cannot be sustained without continually increasing strain on at least one of these factors. We can only reduce strain on one of them (say, lower material throughput) by increasing it on another (say, more service-oriented economic activity, requiring more human labor or more exo-energy).

Under this line of research, we're thus putting under question the long-term viability of interest-based finance. We're constructing a rigorous framework that ties finance together with its physical basis and shows how the nature of above-mentioned factors influences the viability of financial systems. And finally, we're developing propositions for potential new viable financial systems.
