CRITICAL THINKING TRAINING

Training outline
Introduction
Critical thinking is arguably one of the most important mental skills we need to cultivate in the modern world, in concert with empathy and the discipline to avoid the infinite variety of mind-numbing addictions the economy has to offer.
Actively training critical thinking helps us put the information we perceive into a context, make better decisions and filter out meaningful information from the increasingly chaotic noise. It facilitates clarity and guided action, but at the same time the state of constant openness to different points of view, collaboration and awareness of the limitations of our own beliefs.

Modules
Questioning Assumptions
We learn through exercises that underpinning every action or point of view is a set of assumptions - some we are aware of and some we're not - and those assumptions represent the constraints of our thinking and solution-finding.
We apply methods to surface assumptions - both in our own thinking and in group decision making.
We learn the collaborative process of questioning assumptions in order to expand our field of possibilities.
Incentives & Bias
The Method of Opposites
Through exercises, we experience how our cognitive biases such as confirmation bias or survivorship bias can lead to huge distortions of truth.
We recognize that most reasoning is conditioned by incentives - either direct interests or incentives to minimize emotional and cognitive discomfort.
We learn methods to cultivate awareness of biases and incentives, and to take them into account when reasoning or problem solving.
This method is very simple, yet powerful. It involves reframing the problem or looking at a situation from the exact opposite side - e.g. asking how to make the problem worse instead of solving it, or looking for information that contradicts your opinion instead of confirming it.
The method helps us reason better, get comfortable with contradictions and foster mutual understanding.
In the module, we learn the method and put it into practice.
