PROBLEM SOLVING TRAINING

Training outline

Introduction

Most breakthroughs and creative solutions happen when we look at the problem from an angle we previously hadn't. But, in reality, when faced with challenges, most of us tend to jump to known conclusions and solutions too quickly.

In our problem solving trainings, most of what we're doing is employing a variety of methods (most of them fun, some of them a tad frustrating at first) to break free from our usual thinking patterns and understand the situation in a novel way.

Location

Online or in-person (based in Central Slovenia, but organization of trainings is possible across Europe)

Target Audience
  • Organizations and businesses engaged in solving real-world problems, looking to upskill and empower their teams to better understand them, develop solutions in a collaborative way and improve their creativity.

  • Individuals wanting to build their competences in problem solving, perspective-switching and creativity.

Time and Duration
  • Trainings for organizations are organized on demand - contact us for inquiries. Each of the modules described below lasts 3 hours.

  • For individuals, we occasionally organize open training sessions. Check for upcoming events to see if there is a session coming up.

Price

For organizations, the list price is €690 per module, with discounts possible per agreement. Even though the modules are connected, they can be chosen independently. For open sessions for individuals, the price depends on the session and is published there.

Modules

Exploration of the Problem Space
  • We discuss different problem types and how approaches will vary from type to type.

  • We learn to resist jumping to solutions too quickly to avoid solving the "wrong problem".

  • We learn techniques to reframe the problem in many ways in order to open different lanes of thinking.

  • We learn to be explicit about facts, assumptions and unknowns.

Creative Thinking & Culture
Divergence, Convergence & Roles
  • We learn a variety of techniques for exercising creative thinking individually and in groups.

  • We learn communication and leadership approaches to foster creativity in teams.

  • We learn to recognize the barriers to creativity and what we can do to overcome them.

  • Distinguishing between divergence (generation of many ideas without judgement) and convergence (selection or evaluation of ideas) helps us be creative and ambitious, but also realistic and critical.

  • We train the ability to switch between the two modes at appropriate parts of the process.

  • We employ role-based techniques to explore particular aspects of the problem.

Creative Problem Solving Process
  • We structure problem solving into a process where each of the phases includes both diverging and converging modes. The structure is very useful for wicked problems, leading us from setting clear objectives to final acceptance of the solution.

  • We get to know the purpose and activities of each of the phases.

  • We try out the process on practical examples.

  • This is a full-day module.

Context Awareness & Unintended Consequences
  • We learn to expand our awareness from expected benefits of our solutions to other consequences that they might cause.

  • We frame problem solving as an iterative process where the solution potentially becomes the source of new problems.

  • We learn techniques to anticipate unintended consequences and modify or augment solutions in order to avoid unwanted ones and take advantage of beneficial ones.

"If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions."
